Topic Overview in General Studies
Science Lessons: Learning, Exercises, and Tasks
Have you ever wondered why it snows in winter, how a compass works, or how weather forecasts are made? These and other everyday questions are explored in general studies classes at school.
General studies is taught in elementary school from grades 1 to 4. Throughout these years, you will learn about a variety of important and fascinating subjects, such as road safety, planets, first aid, the role of a mayor, animals, plants, and even personal relationships. You will also expand your knowledge about Germany, Europe, pets, and how to interact with others.
What You’ll Explore in Science Lessons
Imagine you're in first grade, and you're starting to learn about the world in a whole new way. You’ll dive into the basics of health – from why washing your hands is important to how staying active keeps you fit. You'll also start understanding the differences between boys and girls, not just biologically, but in how people experience the world. Plus, you'll get your first glimpse into what it means to live in a community, learning about your rights and responsibilities in society. The world is made up of so many diverse cultures, and by studying them, you’ll come to appreciate how normal and exciting this diversity truly is.
In second grade, things get even more exciting as you become an explorer of nature! You’ll discover how to identify animals and plants in your surroundings and learn about their needs. Have you ever thought about why plants grow differently in various seasons? Now you’ll know! You’ll also travel back in time – well, not literally – but you'll begin to understand time, like days, weeks, and years, and how life today compares to events of the past.
By third grade, you’ll be delving into topics like health, emotions, and relationships. Have you ever wondered why we experience certain feelings or how to handle them? Science lessons will show you how! You’ll also get to grips with nutrition by comparing eating habits, and you'll even learn some first aid skills. As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also start discussing how people grow and change, particularly during puberty, and how we can better communicate with each other. Conflict management is an important part of this, whether it's in the classroom, on the playground, or beyond. Plus, you’ll be introduced to traditions from different cultures and learn how to challenge stereotypes and break down prejudices.
Fourth grade is your time to shine as you prepare for the bicycle test. Learning how to ride safely on the road is not just about knowing how to pedal – it’s about understanding traffic signs, knowing the rules, and making sure your bike is in perfect shape. You’ll practice road safety and even learn how to recognize when it's your turn at an intersection. History will also be a big focus this year, where you’ll uncover the stories of people from long ago and see how their lives shape ours today. You’ll explore how technology has developed, from simple inventions to modern machines, and learn how energy powers the world around us.
